Lake Tahoe

Incline Village / Glenbrook / Zephyr Cove / Stateline

Straddling the California and Nevada border, and at an elevation 6,225 feet, Lake Tahoe is world renowned for its exceptional beauty.  Located in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, the Tahoe Basin is known for its ski resorts, casino gaming, beaches, hiking and golf.  It is an exceptionally unique resort community, possessing a diversity of towns and cities, each of which is situated alongside the lake’s seventy-two-miles of shoreline.

Reno/Sparks

Known as the “Biggest Little City in the World,” Reno resides in the Sierra foothills, in the Truckee River Valley on the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada Mountains.  Reno along with the neighboring city of Sparks to the east, occupy an area which is collectively recognized as the Truckee Meadows.  Together, the Reno-Sparks metropolitan area, is the second most populous area in Nevada after the Las Vegas Valley, in Southern Nevada.  The area affords a diversity of recreation, culture, events, gaming, restaurants, shopping, and industry.  Reno is home to the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR).

Reno, Nevada

Carson City

At the eastern edge of the Sierras, Carson City is located to the east of Lake Tahoe, and to the south of Reno.  Rich in history and gaining prominence during the Comstock Lode, the city was named for explorer Kit Carson.  A diversity of historical buildings, sites, and museums are present throughout, providing a glimpse into the city’s storied past.  Carson City has served as Nevada’s capital since the state was founded in 1864.

Carson Valley

Minden / Gardnerville / Genoa

South of Carson City, and just minutes from South Lake Tahoe to the west, lies the Carson Valley, which is comprised of Minden, Gardnerville, and Genoa.  An exceptionally scenic and quiet agricultural community, the Carson Valley offers a wealth of outdoor recreational opportunities.  Minden and Gardnerville, serve as the area’s town center, affording restaurants, shopping, and entertainment.  Genoa, retains its historical identity, having first been established as a settlement for supplying travelers in the 1850’s who were heading to California over the Carson Pass.

Dayton / Virginia city / Fallon / Fernley / Yerington / Smith Valley

Dayton: Located to the east of Carson City, Dayton was established in the 1850’s as Gold Cañon Flat, after gold was discovered in a tributary of the Carson River.  Officially renamed Dayton in 1861, the town rose to prominence after becoming a supplier to miners working in nearby Silver City, Gold Hill, and Virginia City.

Virginia City: Located northeast of Carson City, Virginia City became a mining boomtown in 1859.  The area famously became the site of the Comstock Lode, a silver rush which followed California’s gold rush ten years earlier.  The population of Virginia City peaked in the 1870’s at 25,000, however, there are now less than a 1,000 people living in the area.  The Comstock Lode is recognized as the first silver deposit discovery in the United States.  Shops, museums, and restaurants now celebrate Virginia City’s historical past.

Fallon: Located east of Carson City, in the Lahontan Valley, the town of Fallon was established in 1896.  Named for Michael and Eliza Fallon, who operated a ranch at the site, Fallon is now home to the Navy’s Top Gun training program which was transferred to Naval Air Station (NAS) Fallon in 1996.

Fernley, Yerington, and Smith/Smith Valley: Located east of Reno, Fernley was established in 1904 as a ranching and agricultural community.  East/Southeast of Carson City and the Carson Valley, Yerington and Smith/Smith Valley are also largely ranching and agriculturally based rural areas.
